Introduction

Algeria medical residency database flagAlgeria or Democratic Republic of Algeria, is a North African country. It shares border  with Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania ,Western Sahara and Morocco in the west. Alger is the capital and Arabic is official language but French is business and education language. Berber is also used in the country. Population is 40 million (2015  est.).

Health sector in Algeria has improved by all quantifiable parameters. Algeria needs doctors and paramedical staff as there are only 1.13 doctors per 1000 people. Health provision to poor is usually free of charge and life expectancy at birth is 77.

Undergraduate Medical Education

Undergraduate medical education in Algeria starts after passing a competitive exam (examen de baccalauréat)

Faculty of medicine of Alger offers 6 years of medical studies followed by one year internship 

Medical studies in Algeria is organized in 3 cycles:

  1. 1st cycle is for 3 years and consists of basic medical sciences
  2. 2nd cycle lasts 4 years and consists of 3 years of clinical sciences followed by one year of internship
  3. 3rd cycle consists of specialty training

Student holding a foreign degree certificate recognized as equivalent to Bachelor, can register to study medicine in Algeria (they can get equivalence of their qualification from Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Algeria )

Graduates are awarded with Doctor of medicine degree. Basis medical education is in French.

Algeria Medical Residency

To enter into Algeria medical residency training, medical graduates should sit for Residency Entrance examination, this exam is organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, with its delegates, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the Director of the Department of Medicine

This Algeria medical residency entrance examination is open for all:

  1. Holders of Doctor of Medicine degree (Algerian basic medical qualification)
  2. First year residents who want to change their specialty (this change is allowed only once).

Foreign medical graduates can sit for Algeria medical residency entrance examination if they provide equivalence of their basic medical qualification to the Algerian Doctor of Medicine degree and an authorization from Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The ranking of candidates will be made solely on the basis of marks obtained in the exam. After passing Algeria medical residency entrance exam, medical graduates can take residency in their desired field.

Duration of Algeria medical residency training

Licence/Registration

To practice medicine in Algeria, local and foreign medical graduates should register with National Order of Algerian Doctors in Algeria (conseil national de l’ordre des médécins) there is no examination for registration and foreign medical graduates can register to practice in Algeria, if they get equivalence of their basic medical qualification degree/diploma from Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Procedure

1. Procedure for Algeria medical residency training

Local medical graduates can apply to pass residency test after finishing their seven year education plus internship and getting the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Foreign medical graduates should first apply online here to Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for issuance of Equivalence certificate and authorization letter. This equivalence certificate means that their basic medical qualification is equal to that which is delivered in Algeria (Algerian Doctor of Medicine degree). While authorization letter is a permission allowing them to sit for Algeria medical residency entrance exam. Then doctors need to pass this exam and can start their residency training.

Examination

Algeria medical residency entrance examination consists of three parts:

  1. Part 1: Basic medical sciences exam; consists of 100-120 MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) and 2-3 hour duration
  2. Part 2: Clinical knowledge exam: consists of 100-120 MCQs and 2-3 hour duration
  3. Part 3: Clinical scenario based exam: 100-120 MCQs or Short Essay Questions (SEQs) of total 10 clinical cases and duration is 3 hours.

1. Documents for Algeria medical residency entrance examination

a) A holder of any candidate Doctor Degree in Medicine of The Faculty of medicine of Alger

  • Application form for residency
  • Birth certificate
  • 2 passport size photos (full name written on the back)
  • 4 stamped envelopes labeled with the address of the candidate
  • Certified photocopy of the Doctor’s degree in Medicine
  • A declaration of honor (to be collected at the registration desk at faculty of medicine of Alger university)
  • Application fee of 500 DA (to be paid at the registration desk)

b) For Foreign medical graduates

  • Foreign students holders of Doctor’s degree Algerian  in medicine can enter the contest with the authorization of the Bureau Foreigners of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
  • Foreign applicants holding a Doctor degree non Algerian in Medicine must provide the Equivalence certificate of their degree to sit for Algeria medical residency entrance examination. For equivalence certificate they should apply online here.

2. Documents for licence/registration

  • Fill registration application form
  • 1 birth certificate
  • A certified copy of diplomas
  • A criminal record
  • A certificate of nationality or a copy of identity card
  • 6  passport size photographs.

Fee

Fee of Algeria medical residency exam is 500 DA

Postgraduate Medical Education

Postgraduate medical education can be obtained in different forms in Algeria

Specialist doctor who hold special medical studies degree can participate in competitions for access to the master-grade assistant by Preparation of a research (thesis) in order to obtain a doctoral degree in higher medical education (master grade B). To get master grade A students are required to pass an exam organized by the the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. They can access to grade of professor of medicine by passing an exam organized by  the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

      you can continue residency , you should contact chief of department of dermatology in algeria to give him procedure and more informations example of chief depatment :Le Pr Ammar-Khodja, chef du service dermatologie au CHU Mustapha-Pacha
      also you should be proficient in French B2 level
